Understanding
urinary incontinence
and managing it at home.
Urinary incontinence affects millions of women — disrupting sleep, limiting daily activities, and affecting quality of life. The PureWick system offers a non-invasive, dignified solution that works at home overnight.
Urinary incontinence explained
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine — the inability to control when and how the bladder empties. It is not a disease but a symptom of an underlying condition affecting the bladder, urethra, or surrounding muscles.
It is far more common than most people realize, affecting an estimated 25 million Americans — with women affected twice as often as men. Despite being widespread, it remains underreported because of stigma, with many patients managing quietly without seeking treatment.
Incontinence ranges from occasional leakage during physical activity to a complete inability to reach the bathroom in time. Nighttime incontinence (nocturia and nocturnal enuresis) is particularly disruptive, affecting sleep quality for both patients and caregivers.
Types of urinary incontinence
Understanding which type of incontinence you or your patient has helps determine the right management approach.
A sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by involuntary leakage before reaching the bathroom. Often called "overactive bladder." The most common type in older adults.
Leakage triggered by physical pressure on the bladder — coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise. More common in younger women, often related to pregnancy or childbirth.
The bladder doesn't empty completely, leading to frequent or constant dribbling. More common in patients with diabetes, nerve damage, or an enlarged prostate.
The real impact of urinary incontinence
Incontinence affects dignity, independence, and quality of life — for patients and the caregivers supporting them.
