BD® PureWick® Urine Collection System

The BD® PureWick® Urine Collection System is an external urine collection system for women managing urinary incontinence at home. Unlike a traditional catheter it works externally, with no insertion and no discomfort, drawing urine away from the body using gentle suction and collecting it in a sealed canister at the bedside. It is used mainly overnight, so patients and the people caring for them can sleep without bathroom trips or pad changes.

What it is

An external catheter, not an internal one.

The system has two parts: a soft, flexible female external catheter that rests outside the body between the legs, and a small bedside pump connected to a sealed collection canister. The pump applies low, continuous suction. As urine is released it is drawn along the catheter and into the canister, so it never pools against the skin.

Because nothing is inserted, there is no catheterisation, no pads to change through the night, and no need to move a patient who is bedridden or recovering from surgery. Most people use it overnight, and it can be used for eight to twelve hours at a time before the catheter is replaced.

RA Fischer Co. is an Authorized Distributor. We handle Medicare and insurance verification, the paperwork with the prescribing doctor, delivery, and the monthly refill schedule.

People search for this in different words

  • A wicking system for incontinence, because the catheter wicks urine away from the body
  • A urine suction machine, describing the bedside pump
  • An external urine collection system, the clinical term
  • A non-invasive catheter alternative, for people avoiding an internal catheter
RA Fischer supplies the female external catheter system only
We do not supply a male version. If you are looking for urinary management for a man, contact us and we will point you in the right direction. We are also not currently accepting new patients in some states; our team will confirm when you check coverage.
How it works

A night with the system, start to finish.

Setup takes a few minutes the first time and almost none after that. Most caregivers are comfortable with it on the first night.

Step-by-step guide with photos
1
Set up at the bedside
The pump sits on a nightstand or small table and plugs into a wall socket. A battery option is available where a socket is awkward to reach.
2
Position the external catheter
Placed while lying down or reclined, resting against the body rather than inside it. Nothing is inserted at any point.
3
Gentle suction does the work
The pump runs quietly through the night. Urine is drawn away as it is released, so skin stays dry.
4
Collection in a sealed canister
Urine collects in a closed canister at the bedside, which keeps odour contained and makes measuring output straightforward where that matters clinically.
5
Empty, clean, replace
After eight to twelve hours the canister is emptied and rinsed and the external catheter is replaced. Eligible patients receive 30 catheters a month, which we ship on a schedule.

Yes, for eligible patients. Medicare Part B and Medicare Advantage plans cover the system and the monthly external catheter supply when a doctor documents medical necessity. Many private plans and Medicaid cover it too. We verify your specific plan before anything is ordered or billed. See the full coverage and authorization guide.
Yes. People often describe it that way because the external catheter wicks urine away from the body rather than collecting it against the skin the way a pad does. The clinical name is an external urine collection system.
That is a fair description of the bedside pump. It applies low, continuous suction to draw urine along the external catheter into a sealed canister. The suction is gentle and the pump is quiet enough to sleep beside.
No. The external catheter rests outside the body, which is the main difference from a traditional indwelling catheter. There is no insertion, and no catheterisation is required to use it.
Up to eight to twelve hours, which covers a normal night. The external catheter is then replaced and the canister emptied and rinsed. Eligible patients receive 30 catheters a month, and we manage the refill schedule so you do not run out.
RA Fischer supplies the female external catheter system only. If you are looking for urinary management for a man, contact us and we will point you in the right direction.
Yes. A doctor’s order is required, and insurers ask for documentation of medical necessity. We send the authorization form to the doctor’s office ourselves and follow up, so the coordination is not left to you.
Timing depends on the plan and how quickly the doctor’s paperwork comes back, which is usually the longest step. Once authorization is approved we ship promptly, and a Treatment Specialist keeps you posted along the way.
